Knightdale is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Knightdale is located on the edge of the Cherokee Nation and includes much of what is now Henderson County. It was founded by Captain James Robertson in 1796 as a trading post on the Kentucky-North Carolina border, and became a full-fledged town in 1803. In 1814, it became the county seat of Henderson County after that county was created from portions of Johnston and Robeson counties. The first settler in Knightdale was John Fenton who arrived in 1796. He built a cabin near present day Parkersville and named it "Fenton's Ferry". The first store opened in 1800 and functioned as a post office until 1803 when it moved to what is now Knightdale. In 1814, Henderson County became part of Tennessee following Union victories over the Confederacy during the War for Independence. As part of this change, Henderson County replaced its original courthouse with one designed by architect Samuel Chase which operated from 1865 to 1971. In 1951, local farmers began growing tobacco for cash crops rather than sell it to processors like those found in other parts of North Carolina. This led to an increase in traffic on U.S Route 29A which bisected their acreage; making Knightdale one of the most heavily traveled towns within easy driving distance of Raleigh and Charlotte respectively (at that time). However, this trade did not last long as production switched to other crops once prices escalate began targeting them instead such as corn or soybeans

Knightdale was founded on September 17, 1875 by J.C.Bennett and his brother Robert Bennett as an agricultural village near their father's plantation Castle Hill in what is now Leslie County. The first post office was built in 1876 and the first school opened in 1877. The town grew rapidly due to its location near major transportation corridors such as I-68 and I-95 and its access to forests, farms, and rivers that provided natural resources for local industry. By the early 1990s, Knightdale had become one of the fastest growing communities in eastern North Carolina due to its strong economy and expanding infrastructure including several shopping centers, a library/museum complex, a high school/university system with over 100 colleges/universities (including UNC Chapel Hill), two hospitals (the University Medical Center of Charlotte & NC State Health Sciences Center), multiple parks and playgrounds, as well as many homesites for sale or rent.
