Knightdale is a small town in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Forsyth County. Knightdale has been known as the "Jewel of the South" for many years and is home to several large shopping malls, including one that anchors the larger Research Triangle Park metropolitan area. The city also contains a number of smaller businesses and residences. The area now known as Knightdale was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1798. The name "Knightdale" derives from General James Knox's retreat from battle at Dumfries on April 12, 1793, which occurred just south of present-day Knightdale on what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard. At that time, most people in this part of Forsyth County were farmers and hunters who had come overland from Scotland early in the nineteenth century. By 1871, when present-day Forsyth County was formed out of portions of Cumberland and Johnston counties, Knightdale had a population of 1,500 people and belonged to Hamilton Township (now part of Raleigh). The township acquired its present site in 1876 when it merged with neighboring Raleigh Township to form Raleigh City (now Raleigh). Today's downtown core dates back to about 1900 when commercial activity began expanding rapidly within a few blocks along High Street near today's banks and other retailers before branching off into more than 20 subdivisions extending throughout central Knightdale. Central business district development accelerated during World War II as demand for goods produced locally increased military production; however, much since then has been incremental or supplanted by new retailing centers located elsewhere in the city limits including Research Triangle Park which have mushroomed over time while remaining centrally located within easy commuting distance for both workers and their families As recently as 1970 only 8 percent of all workforce employed here resided inside city limits while nearly 60 percent resided outside but within easy walking or biking distance; today almost three quarters reside within city limits with only 2 percent living primarily outside because they attend nearby universities or colleges Census figures indicate that even though overall unemployment rates are high they have declined markedly over recent decades due largely to heavy investment by local governments through millage/taxation efforts aimed at stimulating job growth In 1990 income per capita here was $26,350 compared with $58,700 nationally; however poverty rates remain high despite significant increases during past decade especially among minority groups such as Hispanics/Latinos who earn an average income less than 50%Of national median

Knightdale is a town in and the county seat of Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 25,926 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. Knightdale was founded by Captain John Wesley Knight in 1799 as a trading post on the Yadkin River. The name "Knightdale" comes from Colonel John Wesley Knight's original estate there. The first school in Knightdale was built in 1801. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1836 and additions were made to it in 1886, 1912, and 1966. In 1907, a cotton gin was built near the present day courthouse square; this became known as "the gin." In 1916, Duke Ellington played his first performance at nearby Piedmont Park here. In 1951, General Motors announced that it would build an assembly plant adjacent to Piedmont Park for its new Buick Division; however, due to protests from residents of nearby Druid Hills Village (now Greensboro), GM pulled out of plans to build the plant after only two years. In 1957-1959 Cherokee Street between Second Street and Davis Boulevard (now US 421) underwent extensive renovation which included resurfacing of streets and installation of new streetlights and lighting systems; this project also added several buildings including a elementary school library (then called “Cherokee Elementary School”). This renovation also created a plaza east of Cherokee Street which served as an open-air shopping mall with four anchor stores: JCPenney (), Sears (), Kmart (), and Pearson (). The mall closed down in 1999 when Best Buy vacated their store there prior to closing down across all five locations nationwide that year because they could not compete with online sales by Amazon () than ever before had done (). On July 30th 1991 an air traffic controller died while flying over Knightsville while monitoring thunderstorms over Raleigh-Durham International Airport; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of what is now known as " Thunderstorm Alley ". In 2002-2004 some large trees were cut down along side US 421 just west of downtown Knightdale during annual seasonal cutting spree by local developers looking for more property for potential development.; these trees have since been replaced but still stand outside city limits visible from Interstate 85
