In 1868, Kinston became known as the "City Of Progress" when it became headquarters for Coca-Cola fame Dr. John Wirtz Sr., who had founded Wirtz Coffee Company there two years earlier. In 1916, Kinston was selected as site for a U.S.-Japan military alliance conference which would be attended by President Woodrow Wilson and Prime Minister David Lloyd George; the town subsequently became known as Allied Headquarters during World War I due to its location within easy reach of many battlefields across Europe and America respectively During World War II, Kinston played an important role as a munitions plants producing aluminum for Japan; residents also produced propaganda flyers sleeve- insigniaed with "KINSTON" throughout Japan during World War II . After hostilities ended in 1945, much like other post-war communities across America - Kinston experienced rapid growth thanks to veterans coming home from service and their families moving into newly vacated homes . With so many people moving into town center (and starting businesses),Kinston quickly gained its nickname “The Village At The Edge Of The Universe” In recent decades however things have started to change: crime rates have increased; infrastructure has not kept up with population growth; and development proposals around downtown have led to protests from residents against high rents and little access to local services .
