Kinston is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. The current mayor of Kinston is Rick Crawford. The town was founded on December 21, 1853 by Scots-Irish immigrants who came to the area during the American Civil War. It became a city on July 1, 1907. The town is named after Sir John Kinross, 5th Baronet of Glencairn and Kinrath (died 1784), an early settler in what is now Dare County. In 1853, the 5th baronet's family moved from their farm near present day Durham to present-day Kinston when they were offered land for sale there by General James B Johnston. The first post office in Kinston was established on December 21, 1853. The name of the town changed to its current form on July 1, 1907 when it merged with neighboring Durham due to incorporation into one city under that name. According to the 2000 Census there are 8600 people living inKinston proper and 8000 living in its surrounding unincorporated areas making it one of the most diverse small towns in America. With so many different cultures represented within its walls it can be said thatkinston truly embodies "the Kipling Rule" - everyone knows somebody!

Kinston is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census, up from 8,539 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Johnston County. Kinston was founded on December 5, 1814 by James Maney and his wife Elizabeth Asbury as a small settlement southeast of what is now Raleigh. In 1827 it passed to Johnston County and in 1868 to Wake County. The first store in Kinston was built by John Rouse in 1821. A post office was established there on December 2, 1824. The first settler in Kinston Township was George Mason on November 3, 1828. He erected a cabin near present-day downtown Kinston and named it "Mason's Cabin." By 1830 there were three stores open in Kinston with an average of 50 customers each day. In 1830 Baptist preacher Cotton Mather preached his famous sermon "A message to the slaves" here after leaving England for America intending to preach free labor gospel to slaveholders there while he awaited passage through U.S. Customs into the country on his way back home from England aboard the ship "Dolphin". The sermon had a major impact on American abolitionists and helped start the Underground Railroad movement which ultimately led to freedom for all Americans regardless of race or color during the antebellum period when slavery continued across much of North America
In 1813, Kinston was founded as a small town by Scots-Irish farmers. The community grew quickly and soon boasted a school, store, and pastor. In 1821, the first post office opened inKinston and the town name was changed to Kinston (later Kinner) County in honor of its founders. In 1827, the first railroad reached Kinston and the community became an important shipping point for goods moving between North Carolina and Georgia. The population of Kinston continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1925 at over 2,500 residents. By 1930, however, the population had shrunk to just 350 people due to industry relocation and World War II shortages of labor. SinceKinston's heyday as a thriving community there have been several changes to the demographics of the town including: increasing numbers of immigrants from Asia; waves of African Americans migrating from South Carolina during Reconstruction; increased traffic on I-95; and a recent increase in retirees living inKinston because of its proximity to Charlotte.
