Freeman opened his own marine gift shop in downtown Kinston and continued to sell items related to the maritime industry until he passed away in 1978. During Freeman's time, Marine Gifts became one of the most popular businesses in town and continue to serve customers today. Other early pioneers of the hospitality industry in Kinston were Fenton & Nichols who operated a restaurant from 1922-1928 and later Roper's Landing Inn which opened its doors in 1924. These establishments helped provide food and drink for sailors ashore during Prohibition years while also providing an opportunity for local residents to purchase items related to maritime culture such as jewelry, clocks, paintings, etcetera. In 1951, Mrs. Alice Hargrave founded The Gullah Coast Resort which served as an important nexus between local fishermen and visitors seeking access to the lucrative seafood resources off the coast of Georgia/South Carolina (then known as just Coastal Carolina). This business opportunity allowed Gullah Islanders access not onlyto high-quality seafood but alsoto luxurious resorts complete with all necessary amenities for both vacationers and business travelers alike- something that has continued into present day!
