Kinston is home to The University ofNorth Carolina at Greensboro and its campus includes many buildings from the early 20th century including the original courthouse and jail. The first settlers in what became Kinston arrived in 1792 on a small boat from Georgia. They named their village "Fayetteville" after General Nathanael Greene who had helped lead the American Revolution. The first store was founded in 1802 and by 1811 there were seven stores in town. In 1814 Kinston had a school, two churches, a post office and three shops. By 1830 there were twenty-one businesses in town with an average daily traffic of $3 worth of goods In 1838 Cherokee Indian traders under Chief John Ross came into town with supplies for retaliation against white settlers who had burned their villages near Fayetteville during the Creek War (1813-1814). As part of this trade they traded furs and other goods for rice, maize, tobacco and other items that were exploited by white farmers throughout eastern North Carolina until after Reconstruction when land values plummeted as a result of new Federal government regulations favoring tenant farming over independent cotton farming . In 1840 Captain James Aiken built his home on Green Street which he continued to live in until his death in 1865 In 1860 Justin Randolph began teaching Kentucky's first high school classes here with six students - now known as UNCG’s Randolph School – before moving to Chapel Hill where he started UNCG’s law department In 1871 JB Frazier opened the first Baptist church west of Raleigh . Frazier led an Evangelical movement that dominated Buncombe County through much of the 19th century He also donated land to build UNCG’s current campus Kinston grew rapidly due to its close proximity to Asheville as well as textile mills located nearby such as Pemberton & Son Incorporated Company Mill No 2 which produced raw materials for both textiles and pharmaceutical products until it closed down in 1951 . Some larger mills like these operated until 1967 when they replaced by smaller companies which left behind numerous empty factories across eastern NC resulting in job losses for rural communities across Eastern NC During World War II many people worked at Peachtree Mills located just outside downtown Kinston while others served within Orchard Air Force Base adjacent to downtownKinston lost much because textile production shifted away from east Tennessee towards central America

Kinston is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Kinston County and one of the most populous cities in Wake County. It is part of Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's earliest known inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted game near what is now Kinston during the early 1700s. In 1792, an act to establish a county seat for Wake County was passed by a General Assembly convened at Greensboro. The location chosen for Kinston was decided by lottery and three other towns were considered; Lexington, Gastonia, and Rocky Mount Railroad depot was chosen over Kinston because it offered more space for businesses and better access to transportation. In 1824, Colonel John Smith built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street in downtown Kinston as his headquarters while he fought with Andrew Johnson in South Carolina during that year's Civil War. When Johnston surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, Smith took him prisoner and kept him inside his cabin until he could be brought before military authorities outside of town where he was paroled after eight days imprisonment In 1875 A&P grocery store opened its doors on Chapel Hill Road in what is now downtown Kinston when Alfred Goldsmith became president of Northern Railway Company which ran trains between Raleigh/Durham and many smaller communities along the way including Asheville (then called Surry County) then Durham (now Orange County). goldsmith dedicated his store to Godfrey Mason who had earlier built A&P's first store west of Atlanta in 1876-77 A&P continued operations until it merged with Kroger Incorporated (the world's second largest grocer) in 1987 which left downtown Kinston without a single retail business larger than 6 square feet catered to customers under $10 million per year . However, some new businesses have started up since then such as The Hometown Grill which opened down Duke Street just off South Tryon Streets nd IHOP restaurant across from UNC School of Law . Downtown also has been home to several art galleries including Triangle Artspace & Gallery + Cocktails which recently relocated from Durham Bulls Hall into two adjacent buildings that used to be Goodyear Tire & Rubber factory before they closed down due to economic conditions Kinston has seen significant growth over recent years due mainly to its connections with Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area through job opportunities available there as well as being partially within walking distance of both large universities - UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University - making it easy access for students or professionals needing work or school supplies not only in downtown but also throughout much of eastern Wake County
