The mountain is named for King George Washington who lived on the mountain during the time that the area was part of Transylvania. At its peak, King's Mountain reaches an elevation of 9,215 feet (3,827 metres). It is also one of the highest mountains in North Carolina and ranks as one of the top five mountains in America. The first European to see King's Mountain was Giovanni da Verrazzano who sailed upriver from Spain on his ship La Pinta in 1524. He sighted Mount Vernon which he thought to be a small island. In 1692 Samuel Johnson visited the mountain and called it "the mountaineer's paradise." A group of Englishmen led by Colonel John Butler built a cabin at Kings Mountain in 1775 while they were fighting against American Revolutionary forces under General George Washington. After the war ended, they moved back to England while their home was destroyed by fire. The British government decided that Mount Vernon should be used as a military base and so construction began on what would become known as Fort Hill northwest of present-day Raleigh. The fort was completed in 1778 and served as a garrison until 1814 when Congress withdrew its troops from Fort Hill due to increased security concerns after the War of 1812. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered Confederate General Robert Ewell to abandon his position on Kings Mountain after Ewell attacked Union troops near Cheat Planet plantation northeast of present-day Raleigh. Aftermath of battle: 300 casualties for Union plus 10 dead Confederates - this makes Kings Mtn one bloody battlefield indeed!
