The first European to see it was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he called it "Mountain of the Virgin." In 1728, General James Johnston invaded North Carolina and camped on the mountain during his march from Charlotte to Greensboro. He ordered his men to build a road up the mountain so they could retreat if their position became untenable. The earliest residents of Kings Mountain were Native Americans who lived on the lower slopes of the mountain before white settlers arrived in droves in 1819. The first white house on King's Mountain was built by Samuel Ashe around 1825. By 1830, there were over 100 white homes on or near King's Mountain. King's Summit Rd., which runs along summit and side of mountaintop, opened as a wagon route between Raleigh and Chapel Hill in 1868 when it replaced a direct path that had been used by Native Americans for hundreds of miles downgradient from their home at Mount Mitchell (now Pisgah National Forest).
