Union troops were able to drive back Confederate forces and capture about 140 prisoners including Lieutenant Colonel John Broughton III whose body still remains buried at Kings mountain complex today

It is one of several mountains in the state which are named for George Washington, and it is also one of several mountains located in the state which are named for Thomas Jefferson. The mountain was first sighted by Europeans on July 10, 1776, when they were exploring the area around present day King's Mountain. The first European to ascend to the summit of King's Mountain was Major General James Johnston, who had been ordered by General Philip Sheridan to explore and assess the potential strategic value of King's Mountain. The peak of King's mountain has been climbed by humans since ancient times. In 1814, Captain John Hunt ascended Kings Mountain with his party from what is now Bladen County in order to punish Cherokees living near NC-73 (now US-29). Hunt used an ascending route that he had surveyed earlier that year and found easier access than those encountered by Colonel Garnett two years earlier on Cherokeeella Creek. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his last stand at Kings Mountain before being killed at White House Hill in nearby Asheville. On September 12th 1865 Union troops under Brigadier General John Custer attacked Custer's position while he rested on his hilltop headquarters; this action resulted in Union commanders Orderly Room Massacre which left dozens dead or wounded among Custer's officers and men including Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Hooker. Kings Mountain remains a popular tourist destination today thanks to its beautiful views and hiking trails accessible from many parts of North Carolina both online and off-road.
