On December 26, 1861 – just two months after Confederate forces attacked Union fortifications at Petersburg – Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to attack Union positions on Kings Mountain led by Colonel James Longstreet and Colonel Thomas Joffree; this attack failed because Union artillery destroyed most of Ewell's force early that morning before reaching their targets……….The battle at Kings mountain may have been fought less than two miles from where future president James Buchanan died when thrown off his horse during a cavalry charge three years later…..In 1886 General William Tecumseh Sherman's 95th Division passed through Kings Mtn., turning it into a base camp for their march up Ia Road against Johnston County during the Battle of Charlotte being reputed to have saved many lives Hugh Johnson built his first mill here in 1825 which processed flour from hay brought down by slaves working on Catawba Creek below the mountain…..After Johnson’s mill closed operations in 1865 local farmers increased production with manure pits and manure lagoons adding another 35 years to its use; until 1974 when it was listed as an endangered landmark by NCSL…..Today visitors can explore parts of old mills still existing such as Hugh Johnson’s Mill Complex which features five buildings dating back to 1830 including a damper/flour press/millshed/storage building/factory complex; also visit Bittersweet Mine which open-air museum features exhibits about coal mining life from 1800-1920………Nearby are several restaurants offering views out over Pisgah National Forest including Indian Peaks restaurant serving traditional Cherokee cuisine…..Kings Mtn offers plenty for activities such as hiking or biking along well traveled trails that lead down to Clearwater River valley or up past Hardee Falls…………Southbound Interstate 85 access points make it easy access to all kinds of outdoor activities within minutes driving distance including waterfalls (Granite Falls), rainforest hikes (Mud Volcano State Park), casinos (Nashville) or markets (Fayetteville).
