The Kings Mountain Army National Guard unit was established in 1885. The first soldiers were called to active duty on November 9, 1885 when the United States Civil War began. The unit was renamed the Carolina Infantry Regiment on September 10, 1890 and served as a part of Confederate forces until 1865. After the war, the regiment disbanded and its members recombined with other units from North Carolina to form the 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment in 1889. In 1898, this regiment also became part of General Robert E Lee’s army and fought in the Battle of Petersburg. On July 16, 1907, all South Carolina regiments (1-4) were consolidated into one brigade under General John W McClellan at Kings Mountain Army Depot for storage and mobilization purposes only. When World War I began on April 6th, 1914, all four brigades had been mobilized but never served in combat due to lack of equipment. However they did serve as training units until 1917 when they were again mobilized for service in France. They fought at Arras where they lost many soldiers including Lieutenant Colonel Newton who was killed while leading his men during that battle In 1921 King's mountain detachment of 5th Cavalry entered World War II being activated February 17th They landed at Normandy Beach June 6th 1944 After 1945 most troops withdrew from country but some remain until 1971

The Kings Mountain Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Old Soldiers," was a Loyalist regiment that fought in the American Revolution. The regiment was originally organized in 1776 from disbanded Loyalist units in North Carolina. The regiment moved to Virginia in 1779 and fought in the Battle of Saratoga and Battle of Yorktown. In 1802, the regiment was redesignated as the 5th Battalion, 9th Regiment, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. The battalion served in India and Burma before being disbanded in 1903. The brigade was reactivated in 1917 as part of General John J. Pershing's Third Army during World War I and served until 1918 when it merged with another brigade to form the 1st Brigade, 8th Division. In 1924, the brigade was redesignated as III Corps' 4th Brigade and served until 1958 when it became III Corps' 3rd Brigade.
King's Mountain is a mountain located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is part of the Asheville-Cary metropolitan area and has a population of over 120,000 people. The peak of King's Mountain is 6,843 feet (1,953 m), making it one of the highest mountains in South Carolina and one of the tallest mountains in North Carolina. The first Europeans to sight King's Mountain were Indian traders who passed through on their way from Cherokee Nation country to what is now Georgia in 1734. In 1739, Captain John Byng explored this area and named it Mount Pleasant after Princess Charlotte, daughter of George II of Great Britain. The name was changed to King's Mountain in 1741 when General James Dobbin built an airfield on the mountain for military purposes and renamed it Dobbin Field after himself. In 1819, General Andrew Johnson encampmented at King's Mountain for three days during his campaign for president before returning home to Kentucky. In 1828–29, General Pea Ridge fought a battle against Creek Indians at King's mountain which resulted in five American killed and twenty-one wounded (including six officers). In 1840s' tobacco farming productivity increased due to fertilization techniques developed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as well as improved technology brought about by railroads that created new markets for goods produced near Tobacco Valley south of Raleigh; accordingly, many white farmers moved into these areas around Kings Mountains during this time period while African Americans continued working within slave plantations nearby or inside towns such as Cary or Wilmington NC until emancipation effective December 6th 1865 A map prepared by Gouverneur Morris shows that there were more than seventy black families living on these farms pre-1860 census
