The town was founded by John Kern in 1837 as a small cabin community on the west bank of the Albemarle River. In 1853, he moved his family to what is now downtown Kernersville and began to develop it into a town with an early school, store, post office, clergyman (the first pastor), doctor (later a congressman), blacksmiths and other businesses. By 1840, he had organized a town council and built two churches: one Greek Revival style with brick vaults and brick piers; the other Gothic Revival style with stone arches and slate roofs. He also developed land that became today's downtown area including parts of present-day Heidelberg Township as well as what is now Parkervilleam Village east of Heidelberg Townshipline on farm land which he donated to build what is now Riverside Park (). The park opened in 1909 as part of plans for development along Albemarle Boulevard from Heidelberg Township line near Needles High School to northward along Albemarle Boulevard through Parkervilleam Village before reaching its current location next to Moorpark Medical Center (). In 1861 John Aviron purchased some additional piece of real estate east of town center from James Latham which included present day southbound I-85 exit 164A (now US 517) between Easley Road/SR 1 (now US 421) east of downtown onto Old State Highway 54 then northeast past US 421 onto I-85 where it continues as SR 154 until its merger with I-575 six years later). This put eastern Kernersville within easy walking distance both northward along I-385 towards Raleigh or northwest on SR 158 towards Daytona Beach or southeast on I-95 south past Cedar Rapids before turning southwest on I-95 back into North Carolina for most people until Interstate 840 split them off about 1990 when rural Interstate 95 designation were given back to North Carolina for all intrastate travel purposes only
