Kernersville is a small town in western North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1868 and is located on the banks of the Kern River. The population was 8,893 as of the 2010 census. The name may be derived from early settler George Kern, who named his land after his father-in-law, John Kern. The town began as a farming community and rapidly grew during the early decades of the 20th century due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes. By 1930, Kernersville had become an important transportation center for eastern North Carolina thanks to its position on U.S. Route 258 and its access to railroad trains that passed through the town. In that decade, Kernersville also became known for its annual Fourth of July parade which attracts thousands of spectators each year. During World War II, Kernersville played an important role inthe Battle of Okinawa where many residents served in military units such as artillery and Marines. After the war ended, many families returned to their homes in Kernersville and various businesses were developed including a Machine Shop Company which manufactured water pumps and other products for local farmers; a Textile Mill which produced uniforms for American troops; and a Store which sold groceries and other goods throughout central North Carolina. Many buildings still stand today including the courthouse (built in 1907), post office (1892), bank (1914), Methodist church (1915), Male dormitory (1899) and Female dormitory (1910). In recent years, renovation efforts have been underway to facade some old buildings while new construction has taken place within the boundaries of downtown Kernersville proper - resulting in increased significance for this historic community overall since it remains under one municipal jurisdiction rather than being divided among several municipalities).
