In 1925, the US military built Fort Bragg northwest of town to protect against Japanese threats during World War II. After the war ended, much of the cotton industry closed down and many people left town; however, some new businesses moved into town and it slowly regained its growth over time

Kern, who fought in the American Civil War. Kernersville is a small community with a relatively small population. It is home to only about 350 residents and it had a population of just over 100 in 1920. The most important aspect of Kernersville’s history are its people. These residents have helped make the town what it is today and have played an important role in its growth and development. The first inhabitants of Kernersville were Native Americans who live there today. A group of Englishmen settled in the area in 1785 and started trading with the natives. The first mill onthe site was built by these men and it operated until 1814. In 1825, John Denton bought land at the edge of present-day Kernersville from the native tribe and began developing it into a settlement. Denton built his house onpresent-day Main Street in 1827 and named his settlement after himself, James Akerdene Kerns (1801-1867). In 1830, Anna Ladd opened her own store near where Main Street now stands. This store was one of the earliest businesses in town and continued to be open until 1939 when it closed because of economic decline.� In 1840, Isaac Tomlinson established himself as a doctor in nearby Lenoir City.� Tomlinson became well known for his services to local patients.� By 1850, he had purchased additional land east of Present-day Main Street which he named “Tomlinson field” after himself.� This land served as Tomlinsons’ farm until 1886 when they sold it to Wm Henson.� Henson developed this property into an agricultural center which produced hay, oats, peas, cottonseed oil, etc.� By 1907 we had two churches � St Peters Episcopal Church (now First Baptist)�and Methodist Episcopal Church (now United Methodist).� In 1912 George Washington White purchased 20 acres east of MainStreet from Henson for $2 per acre which he used to build an elementary school.� This school continued operation until 1954 when it closed due to budget constraints.� Two years later another elementary school � East High School �was opened within walking distance of Main Street.� East High School closed circa 1990 but reopened 2006 as Pritchett Middle School.� As mentioned earlier individuals from all backgrounds came together at this time to form what would become known as “The New Town Hall Association” or TNA for short.- From here they decided on their plans for growth - building more schools; creating more businesses; improving internet access; beautifying downtown streets; erecting new homes � many brought their families with them‑ In 1951 Dr Harry Weems set up shop outside election day dispensing medical supplies including antibiotics during voting season.- soon other merchants followed suit such as Mrs Fannie Kapp who ran her own grocery next door from 1951 through 1957.- by 1964 all stores were consolidated under one roof making shopping easier than ever before!

In 1966, Kernersville became one of only two towns in North Carolina (along with Chapel Hill) to receive a nuclear power plant—the other being Wilmington. Today, Kernersville is a vibrant community with close relationships between its residents and businesses alike.
