It was from this business that the name “Kernersville Coffee House” originated. The restaurant served fresh roasted coffee all day and into the night until 1907 when it closed its doors for good. The second store to open in Kernersville was called The Dutchman’s Emporium and it operated from 1857-1858. This store Provided a full line of groceries, including coffee, eggs, bacon, butter, etcetera. In 1873 an Italian immigrant named Antonio Boccone opened a grocery store on High Street which soon became known as The Italian Market Place. At this time Italians were becoming more popular among local farmers and businessmen in Kernersville because of their skill at farming and their availability to buy goods at low prices. In 1915 the townspeople voted to establish its own school system which led to the opening of Kernersville High School on Third Street in 1917). This school would become one of the most important institutions in nearby Lowndes County as it offered education for both boys and girls up through high school level. In 1950/1951 new additions were made to the school complex including a gymnasium and art studio which are still used today! In 1957 KHS moved into its current building on Fourth Street which has been home to the school ever since! Today, not only is Kernersville home to one of America’s oldest or most well-known coffee businesses but also its largest public library with over 350 rare books! In 1887, a small coffee shop called the Dutchman was opened in Kernersville. The business served as the first stop for people on their way to town from surrounding farms. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cullinger opened the present day Coffee House & Cafe in Kernersville. They continued to serve coffee until they passed away in 1978. The Coffee House was then taken over by the Goudreau family who continued to operate it until 1997. In that year, the Coffee House building was given to the Kernersville School District and has been used as a schoolroom ever since.

During World War II, Kernersville played an important role as a munitions dump due to its location near Durhamport Lake which served as both an airbase for Allied bombers during Operation Overlord and as Germany's primary source for supply during the warring occupation period (1946-49). After the war ended, many plant jobs were lost due to economic recession; however, new industries have emerged such as health care technology companies that are based out of nearby Raleigh or Chapel Hill – making Kernersville one of the fastest growing towns in southeasternNorth Carolina over recent decades!
