Kernersville is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census and 2,512 as of the 2010 census. Kernersville is part of the Blue Ridge Council of Governments and its schools are also part of that community. It is bordered by Campbell County to the east, Henderson County to the south, and Wise County to the west. The first settler in Kernersville was James Fenton in 1837. The first store in Kernersville was built on Main Street in 1847 by Ebenezer Dickey. The first post office was opened in 1852 by George Waddell. In 1865, John Sartain established a sawmill near Kernersville and it still operates today. In 1870, Mrs. Candalie Poindexter founded a school for girls which still functioned until 1978. In 1904, Charles Hennepin opened a general store on Second Street which became known as "Hennepin's". In 1916, Jens Hansen began operations as a general store on Third Street which continued until his death in 1984. During World War II, local businesses made donations to support military families with goods like food and clothing during their time off work or while they were serving abroad; these include Hennepin's General Store (now an antique store), Mr.'s Garage (later renamed Donnybrook Lumber Co.), Jakob's Restaurant (now closed), Alice's Grocery (closed) and Harry & Sons' Furniture Store (closed). The town was founded by John Kerners and his family in 1824. A post office was established here in 1827, and by 1830 the town had a store, schoolhouse, and two churches. By 1838 it had six stores and one hotel. In 1861 the Confederate army besieged Union forces in this area during the American Civil War; after four days of fighting Kernersville came under Union control. In 1907 Kernersville incorporated as a city. In 1951 it became an independent municipality with its own government and mayor. After years of growth it reached its current size with 1,919 residents in 2000 Kernersville is located on US 11 between Charlotte and Raleigh (northwest of Chapel Hill). It has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with warm to hot summers and mild to cool winters; average monthly temperatures are 76-78 degrees F (24-26 degrees C). There are many trees in the community including oak trees that have been around for centuries because their bark can resist damage from fire . The largest tree in town is called "The Big One" which stands tall at over 100 feet tall
