Kannapolis is a city in western North Carolina, United States. The population was 41,787 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in the state. Kannapolis is the county seat of Davidson County. The city is part of the Raleigh–Durham area and is surrounded by Durham County to the east, Buncombe County to the north, and Orange County to the west. It is within Wake Forest University's Research Triangle Park. The origins of Kannapolis are unknown but it likely grew up on an artificial stream called "Pine Brook" which ran through what is now downtown Kannapolis. The first permanent settler in what became Kannapolis was Nicholas Pevsner who arrived around 1775 and built a house on land that he bought from John Kittrell for $200. Pevsner named his new town "Kannapolis." By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Kannapolis with about 25 businesses. In 1819 Nicholas Pevsner died leaving behind a familyowned store which continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to manual labor from 50 employees working day and night creating enough smoke and heat to incinerate entire buildings several times over; this event also sparked one of history's earliest protests against factory conditions when women took tothe streets (and later picket lines)to advocate for better working conditions for their male counterparts! In 1827 two brothers named Andrew Johnson purchased some land east of downtown from Nicholas Pevsner which formed what would eventually become known as Johnsons Necklace development (now known as One Campus Martius). Andrew Johnson Sr., son of Andrew Johnson II founded Andrews University in 1827 and taught mathematics until his death in 1881; during his tenure, Andrews made significant contributions to American education including founding Dartmouth College (1826), Yale University (1829), Middlebury College (1830), and George Washington University (1835). From 1830-36 Wirt Walker served as president of Andrews University under Robert Eager Hoke. During this time period large numbers of Africans had been brought over as slaves by their owners into what would become North Carolina – many men who owned these slaves worked on plantations near Greensboro where they were able to attend school while learning English so they could be traded back home upon their release or given passage away among friends or relatives duringfreezeouts or other periods of shortage/market volatility. Many African Americans who did not own property developed strong ties to local white businesspeople such as James Fenton who donated land next door to Johnsons Necklace for a Masonic lodge hall soon after its establishment; this building still stands today housing UNC Chapel Hill’s School Of Medicine Fenton also helped start Unitarian Universalist Church located on Main Street across from City Hall becoming one of America’s largest urban Unitarians with services conducted every Sunday morning starting in 1858 During this time period many important African American professionals migrated westward including Drayton Wright who established himself as one of America’s preeminent surgeons before moving permanently Westwards settling at San Francisco where he founded Stanford Hospital & Medical School

Kannapolis is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,944 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. At one time part of the Cherokee Nation, Kannapolis was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrive from Ulster in what is now Northern Ireland. The town became known for its carpentry and farming products. In 1881, the Kannapolis Manufacturing Company was founded with plans to produce cotton goods and other items needed for export to Europe. The company failed but it helped spur development in Kannapolis and surrounding communities during the 19th century. In 1902, local textile manufacturer J W Marriott began producing a line of luxury sofas called "Marriott Sofa". This led to increased business for Kannapolis over time as consumers sought out finer materials and better value than they could find elsewhere in the state or country. The city of Charlotte annexed parts of Gaston County in 1900 which included parts of Kannapolis proper including Millbrook along with much of neighboring Mecklenburg County. However, annexation did not result in any significant changes to current demographics or economic status within either community; rather both municipalities continue to operate largely separate but affiliated public entities today
The Kannapolis area was first settled by the Cherokee in the late 17th century. In 1851, a group of white men from nearby Jacksonville purchased land at what is now downtown Kannapolis and named it for General Richard Montgomery, who had helped to lead the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The city name evolved over time to its current form, Kannapolis, after General John Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga Springs in 1777.
