Jacksonville is a city in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 21,865 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville was founded on December 12, 1837 by John Broughton and James Hance as a town named after James Fayette Jacksonville, an American Revolutionary War veteran and rose to military prominence during the war as a colonel of the Continental Army. The original townsite was located near where Jacksonville now stands. On February 11, 1840, Jacksonville became the county seat of Duplin County under the new system of government created by General Robert E. Lee after his victory over George Washington in Yorktown. In 1881, Jacksonville amalgamated with two other towns in Duplin County – White Rock and Blackwood – to form what is now known as Jacksonville Beach. In 1906, Jacksonville annexed parts of Chatham Parish including its large if undeveloped area along Florida Boulevard which forms much of today's downtown core. The annexation allowed for more commercial development within reach of residents while also opening up land that would become some of the most valuable real estate inDuplin County history. Today’s downtown core is home to many businesses such as Jaguars Stadium (formerly known as Municipal Stadium), JCPenney anchors one side of State Street between Highland Avenue and First Street South and Marriott Marquis Hotel occupies another corner on State Street just east of First Street South
