Jacksonville is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Jacksonville were Native American fishermen and traders from both the Southeast and Great Lakes regions. In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded an agricultural colony on the east coast of Long Island Sound which he named Stonington after his friend and neighbor Colonel Thomas Stonington of Portsmouth, England. The town rapidly grew as a result of its location midway between Charlotte and Raleigh on two major waterways - the Cape Fear River to the south and Morehead River to the north - and its natural resources: rich soil, Cumberland coal fields, salt water marshes, timberlands and citrus groves. By 1800 Jacksonville had become one of America's most important seaports with $10 million in exports that year alone. In 1812 Jacksonville became successively a state seat (from Anson) in addition to its previous role as a port town; it received city charter status on April 12th 1824. On November 14th 1860 Jacksonville was incorporated as a city by act of the North Carolina General Assembly On December 5th 1897 City Council voted 8-1 against annexation by Wake Forest University because they felt it would have negative effects on their students' academic facilities there (the university still maintains strong ties to Jacksonville). After this vote some members of council reconsidered their decision but ultimately added Wake Forest back into city government in 1898 when it became apparent that they would not be able to refuse any overtures from UNCG universities or other institutions looking for land within their boundaries during this time period due to restrictive state laws at that time governing municipalities' ability to annex non-county areas such as cities without prior approval from county commissioners

The Battle of Jacksonville was fought on November 8th, 1814, during the American Civil War. The battle took place at the Battle of Haines's Mill in Jacksonville County, North Carolina. The Union force opposed Confederate General Pemberton's attempt to cross the Savannah River and move against Fort Fisher. In the early morning hours of November 8th, 1814, Union troops attacked Confederate forces encampment at Haines's Mill in Jacksonville County. The outnumbered Confederates fought bravely but were eventually overwhelmed by a superior Union force. Many Confederate soldiers died or were captured in this engagement.
