The following year, Captain John Fenton bought a rifle from Elisha Gray and shot an animal at an animal show in Jacksonville. This event is considered the first gun shooting competition in Jacksonville. By 1889, there were more than 100 gun stores in Jacksonville and over 1,500 firearm purchasers. In 1898, Mayor A.T. Chapman sponsored the passage of General Assembly Bill No. 925 which allowed citizens to buy firearms without obtaining a license from the state police department or paying a fee. This permission was given to individuals who could demonstrate their ability to own and carry firearms responsibly. The Gun Owners’ Society (GOS) was founded on this legislation and has been active ever since within the community of Jacksonville for personal protection and hunting purposes only! In 1906, Sheriff Wm Hargrave Purchased a Smith & Wesson revolver from Ira Farnsworth for use as his personal weapon while serving as sheriff of Jones County, Tennessee Territory! This purchase is significant because it marked the first time that handguns were legally purchased by county sheriffs across the United States! In 1934, Governor James Blythe signed into law House Bill No.(H-1934) which provided for universal registration of all firearms within one week after purchase! This event marks the beginning of handgun registration across America! It also signified changes in our society as guns became more accessible to everyone through standardization throughout different states!
