Jacksonville, North Carolina is a city in and the county seat of Duplin County, North Carolina. The population was estimated at 95,512 as of 2019. Jacksonville is located on the Savannah River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Raleigh, the state capital. Jacksonville is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the United States and has a large Brazilian or Portuguese community. The city's nickname is "The City on the Bay" because it borders both Charlotte and Raleigh to the south and east respectively. In 1819 Jacksonville was founded by Willingdon Smith as a small trading post on Hatteras Island. In 1824 it became an independent town under English rule with its own government and currency system. It was acquired by North Carolina in 1827 when that state seceded from Virginia. In 1830 Jacksonville became part of Duplin County; but it reverted to its original status as an independent town until 1861 when it became part of Wake Forest County after that county was created from parts of Durham and Johnston counties. In 1907 Jacksonville annexed what is now Carytown which had been a part of Johnston County since 1798 when that county was created from parts of Orangeburg and Person counties. The first European to visit Jacksonville were Spanish soldiers who landed there in 1565 during King James I's attempt to invade Florida for Spain; they were followed by other Europeans in 1567–68 including Giovanni da Verrazzano who named Jaguars Harbor after his ship La Juana de la Vega which he sighted near Cape Lookout upon his return trip from India in 1587–88 He also purchased land along the Savannah River for development which included creating what is now downtown Jacksonville In 1694 Englishman James Edward Musgrove established Musgrove plantation at present day Starke Beach on Stono Ferry Road across from present day First Baptist Church; this property would later become known as Musgrove Park However, only two years later Englishman William Byrd moved ashore with 400 men at Fort Mecklenburg Purchase where he laid out Tryon Street between Pinehurst Avenue and Government House Square where he built Trinity Presbyterian Church having received land grants from King George III On January 7th, 1729 John Laurens placed his claim to an abandoned cabin near what would eventually become downtown Jacksonville on high ground just west side Tryon Street between Patton Boulevard (now Forsyth Avenue) and South Tryon Street After several days Nathaniel Bacon arrived with five men armed with bows & arrows looking for food supplies leading upriver toward more developed areas beyond today's limits within what are now Old City boundaries; they found no food but did find water buffalo hides someone had hunted down earlier That same day Captain James Cook departed England aboard HMS Endeavour bound for New Zealand Upon reaching An Heads – latitude 24 degrees 45 minutes north – some fourteen days after leaving England sighting cape Cape York – today’s Halifax Harbor – he registered his landfall here naming this point “Cook’s Land” NOTE: It should be noted Captain Cook never set foot on Canada soil but reached Newfoundland well before any Spanish explorers ever did OR visits were made by Spanish explorers prior to American conquest OF AMERICA HERE I AM!
