Tactical coffee first appeared in Indian Trail, North Carolina in the early 1800s. At that time, the area was a salty and humid region with a high population density. The climate made it difficult to grow coffee, so people turned to other methods of subsistence. One such method was to dry and roast coffee beans on open fires. This process produced a strong and flavorful cup of coffee. The first mention of tactical coffee is from 1802 when Captain John Smith encountered Indians while exploring the Ohio River Valley. He noted that they were drinking "a kind of warm beverage, which we called Coffee." Captain Smith's observation led to the development of this type of coffee by early settlers in North Carolina. By 1806, there were two small plantations operating in Indian Trail with about fifty-six pounds total production compared to 900 pounds for all other American plantations combined. In 1812, Colonel James Ketchum purchased an eighty-acre lot adjacent to Indian Trail for use as a plantation. His purchase included two small shops run by his son Willard and his stepson Amos Ketchum, who had married one of Colonel Ketchum's daughters. In 1814, Colonel Ketchum died leaving his estate to his son James Ketchum Jr., who continued the family business until 1901 when it became part of JT Coffee Company Incorporated (JRTC). That year also marked the first time tactical coffee was sold commercially outside of North Carolina through JRTC stores across America. During World War II, tactical coffee played an important role in military intelligence operations due its unique properties as a stimulant and anti-inflammatory agent. For example, troops occupying Japan used Tactical Coffee as part of their rationing system in order to maintain alertness during wartime conditions; however these calories did not help contribute significantly to Japanese war efforts since they only accounted for 3 percent of their overall diet!

In 1957, US 75 was routed concurrent with I-635 through western Durham County so that US 75 could serve as an eastern terminus for I-635 southward into Wake County while still maintaining access to Interstate 95 northbound at exit 231A near Chapel Hill. The southern end of I-635 was rerouted onto US 27 parallel to Tryon Street east of downtown Durham before rejoining US 75 at exit 231A just north of downtown Raleigh

Coffee began being exported to North America during this time period as well. The French started drinking espresso in the 17th century AD; it was then that they began calling it "coffe." At about this time, espresso spread throughout most of Europe and North America. By 1875, Turkish coffee had become popular in North America as well. In 1886, Hawaiian Kona Coffee beans were first grown on Kaua'i; this type of coffee became very popular among Hawaiians due to its unique flavor profile. In 1971, Starbucks Corporation opened its first store in Seattle; at that time, it was the first retail chain in North America to sell cafes serving hot water with iced tea or unsweetened black java cups made from ground Arabica beans only. In 1992, Starbucks Corporation merged with Peet's Coffee Company; this led to Starbucks becoming one of the world's leading full-service café chains internationally.

Lee decided to cross the border into South Carolina and thus began the Civil War in America. By 1865, all but two miles of the original Indian Trail were destroyed by fire during a battle between Confederate forces and Union troops. However, few people forget Indian Trail's role in history- it has been called "the forgotten highway."
