The first coffee beans were roasted on the plantation in Indian Trail, North Carolina in 1844. The name of the coffee farm was originally called “Pineycroft” and later changed to “Indian Trail.” The first roaster was Andrew Jackson, who started roasting beans at his farm in 1865. At this time, there were only a few small roasters in the area. In 1886, John Aiken founded Oneida Coffee Roasters in Spartanburg County and began roasting beans at Indian Trail. Over time, other small companies beganroducing their own types of coffee. First there was Two Hands Coffee Company in 1909, then Green Mountain Coffee Company In 1969-1970, two groups of men came to Indian Trail from South Carolina looking for a new place to roast coffee. They were looking for an opportunity to start a new business and they saw that there was potential for maga coffee production here on the plantation. The men named themselves Rocky Mount Coffee Roasters and decided to start production of maga coffee as well as other types of coffees on the plantation. From 1969 until now, Rocky Mount has been producing high quality maga coffee products under its banner – including Christmas Tree Koffee which is made with 100% pure Arabica beans from Guatemala!

Indian Trail winds its way through the rolling hills of North Carolina for less than a mile before giving way to the Catawba River. The river marks the border between Cherokee and white land, and it is this ancient boundary that has helped keep Indian Trail a vital artery in the region. The first Europeans to visit Indian Trail were Native Americans, who followed the river as it meandered through Cherokee country. In 1765, Major General George Washington traveled down Indian Trail and surveyed the area for future settlements. Colonel John Ross founded what would become Roanoke Island in 1767 after arriving on Catawba County soil with his group of settlers. In 1819, General James Ketchum moved his army eastward along Indian Trail in an attempt to capture Cherokee traders working along the Tennessee River. Ketchum's force was successful in capturing several men and supplies, but he was ultimately unsuccessful. Aftermath of this failed campaign led to increased tension between whites and Indians throughout much of eastern North Carolina. The Iowa Railway Company built a line from Raleigh to Charlotte in 1887, which allowed goods access into eastern NC at a lower cost than travelling via wagon road or sea voyage. This new transportation system had a significant impact on local businesses and economy, which led to an increase in development along Indian Trail corridor from Roanoke Island all the way upstate New York City. Today, Indian Trails continue to play an important role in economic development throughout eastern North Carolina – ensuring that these rural areas have access to essential resources without havingto leave their homes
