The North Carolina National Guard was activated on September 9, 1911. The unit was named the 1st Regiment, NC National Guard and it was stationed at Huntersville from 1912 to 1917. In 1917, the regiment was renamed the 1st Battalion, NC National Guard and it remained in Huntersville until 1921. In 1921, the battalion relocated to Raleigh and became part of the 4th Infantry Division. The division served in World War II as a reserve force and then returned to active duty in 1946. The division disbanded in 1984 but elements continued to serve under various names through 1992 before being reorganized as the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (2 IBCT) on November 3rd that year. Today, there are two battalions of the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1 IBCT) still headquartered at Huntersville while also a detachment based out of Charlotte which is made up of soldiers from both battalions together with other units located throughout North Carolina providing support for state military police detachments when needed or requested by local law enforcement agencies

The National Guard was first called to duty in Huntersville, North Carolina on December 5, 1861. On that date, Governor Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation calling for the formation of a national guard force to serve as an Emergency Force in event of any insurrection or rebellion. The first unit organized in Huntersville was Company A of the 2nd Regiment North Carolina Volunteer Infantry. On September 12, 1865, Captain John S. Rankin ordered all units within the state into immediate readiness for service in case of war with Mexico. This order included company A from Huntersville and their equipment was trucked northward to Elizabeth City where it would be used in preparation for military service under General Sherman’s campaign against Mexico. Company A remained active until November 1865 when it disbanded due to its disbanding orders from Captain Rankin and lack of volunteers for future operations
