Huntersville is a town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,046 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1792 by John Smith and named for Gabriel Hunter who had been killed during the Cherokee War. The first store opened in 1831 and by 1851, Huntersville had a school, post office, and two churches. In 1870, the railroads arrived and soon Huntersville became an important transportation center for the region. By 1900, there were ten businesses in town and ninety-six people employed in farming or manufacturing activities. As industry declined throughout the 1940s and 1950s, however, Huntsville's population gradually decreased until it reached its current level of 7476 as of 2010. Today hunterstown boasts many interesting attractions such as four NASCAR tracks (the most recent being Lowe's Motor Speedway), a large shopping mall with over 150 businesses inside and outside of it as well as several restaurants including Subway sandwich shop which has been open since 1978 - making it one of the longest running stores still open in NC! In 1802, the United States Congress passed an act creating a new county in North Carolina, called Charlotte County. The original boundaries of this county were based on present-day Huntersville. In 1851, the population of Charlotte County was over 100,000 and it had become apparent that there was insufficient space to accommodate all of these people. A group of businessmen and farmers formed the Charlotte County Board of Commissioners to propose that Charlotte County be divided into two counties: Hunterdon County would include what is now eastern Raleigh and western Davidson counties would include what is now eastern Cary and western Wake Forest counties. This proposal was accepted by the board and became effective on July 1, 1851. With this new structure in place, Huntersville began to grow rapidly. By 1860, it had reached its current size with a population of over 25,000 people. It wasn’t until after World War II that Hunterdon County truly became known as a “bedroom community” for Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area residents because so much business activity took place in Durham City and Chapel Hill. In 1971, Huntersville received its own charter from the State of North Carolina which created special privileges for it such as being allowed to set its own taxes (a unique feature at that time), having its own fire department (which still exists today), being granted permission to build a shopping mall downtown (which didn’t happen), and more importantly allowing for faster development than other municipalities within the same county government at that time. Since then, Huntsville has seen continued growth with annexations from neighboring jurisdictions including Chapel Hill/Durham in 1998 and Eden Prairie/Fayetteville in 2002; both cities have since achieved their current populations levels while maintaining their rural character which makes them ideal spots for retirees or young adults who are looking for an unpretentious yet comfortable lifestyle outside of major city centers like Raleigh or Durham.
The first white settlers in Huntersville, North Carolina were Hugh Stevenson and his family. The town was founded on the site of a small Indian village that had been abandoned by the Indians. Hugh Stevenson named the town after himself, and it became known as Stevensonville. In 1822, General Andrew Johnson invaded North Carolina and destroyed much of what remained of the Cherokee Nation.
