The town first grew up around a mill that had been built in 1792 by English colonists. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1821, but the town continued to grow around it. In 1871, Methodist missionaries started teaching Christianity to local Native Americans and settlers in the area. The missionaries soon realized that there were many poor people living near the mill on gentle rolling hills outside of Hope Mills. So they began building a school and chapel in hope that these people would be encouraged to convert to Christianity and help improve their lives. In 1901, Hope Mills became an incorporated city with a population of about 2,000 people. Theaters and other businesses were started hereto support the growth of the city. In 1933, when World War II began, Hope Mills became part of Allied Expeditionary Force Headquarters at Camp David which housed over 1 million troops during this time period! After World War II ended, Hope Mills reverted back to its original status as an unincorporated community once again until it gained cityhood again in 1951! Today, Hope Mills has seen some significant changes over the years including becoming home to several large research universities such as UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University; growing into one of Mecklenburg County’s biggest commercial districts; becoming an center for arts and culture; developing new neighborhoods such as Bellemere Gardens & Clinton Woods; and experiencing strong growth across all demographics both within town itself as well as outlying areas!
