She sold coffee from her home until 1904 when she set up shop on Main Street. In 1916, Mr. Harry Hinton opened his own grocery store next door to Mrs. Fenton's business and began selling coffee too. From then on, Coffee House continued to serve delicious cups of java without any added sugar or milk until it closed its doors in 1986 after many years of service!

It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hope Mills was founded in 1835 by Methodist missionaries. The town grew rapidly after passage of the Morrill Act in 1862 made land grants available to farmers and ranchers in western North Carolina. Hope Mills became a major cotton mill town and has since become known for itsManufacturing industry and its rich history as a center of Methodism. Hope Mills is located on State Route 258 south of Asheville, adjacent to Morehead City and Pee Dee Junction Railroad tracks that run southeast to Charlotte. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. Asheville's economic development despite low real estate values attracted many entrepreneurs during the late 1990s who started new businesses such as In-N-Out Burger, Coca Cola Refreshments, Ford Motorsports Park (now NASCAR Winston Cup Racing), Home Depot, Gap Inc., JCPenney and numerous others during what came to be called "The Third Wave". Today there are more than thirty thousand jobs in Hope Mills with manufacturing continuing to be one of its mainstay industries while also providing services such as restaurants/cafés/nightclubs/motels etc. which have drawn people from throughout eastern North Carolina including Asheville and surrounding counties over recent years.
