Holly Springs, North Carolina, is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population of Holly Springs was reported as 5,644 at the 2010 census. Holly Springs is one of the poorest towns in the United States and has experienced many economic hardships over the years. The history of Holly Springs dates back to 1836 when Hugh McCullough settled in what is now Holly Springs. McCullough was interested in exploring new areas and decided to settle in what is now Holly Springs because there were no other settlements nearby that could offer him shelter and food during his travels. Holly Spring's name comes from a spring that still exists today near the intersection of Ulysses Road and Gooding Drive. When Hugh McCullough discovered this spring, he named it after himself since he had found it while on his travels. Back then, these springs were considered valuable because they provided water for horses and people alike. The first families to live in what is now Holly Springs moved into their homes starting from 1839 until 1840 when General John Humphrey established a military post known as "Humphrey’sFort." Humphrey used this location to store goods needed for his army during the American Civil War which led to many businesses being founded around Humphrey’s Fort including a bakery, grocery store, physician’s office, blacksmith shop and more. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson ordered General Winfield Scott to move supplies from Fort Donelson south through Hawkinsville before moving on towards Raleigh. This caused many businesses owners in downtown Hollyspring closed up shop due to lack of supplies available nearby. However, by November 1865 all business had reopened with some limited damage done although much furniture was lost or destroyed during this time period due to instability at home fronts such as Hurricane Andrew which struck South Carolina barehanded on September 15th that year with devastating results across much of Central Florida including Jacksonville where much property was destroyed). This hurricane also caused significant damage throughout central North Carolina although most notably along Interstate 85 between Charlotte & Wilmington where large amounts of trees were uprooted & power lines knocked down leaving millions without power for days leading up to landfall which included severe flooding throughout much coastal NC including parts of New Bern & Beaufort County particularly within Hilton Head Island depending upon tide times) .A total effort by local authorities (including National Guardsmen) resulted in over 2 dozen arrests/bookings following storm surge effects across coastal NC preceding landfall with looting etc taking place especially among those living inland primarily along I-85 corridor north past Wilmington prior impacts ). Hardship conditions persisted well into fall seeing very little crop production despite efforts by farmers militia units besieging rural communities within sight or reachof military forces ). Post-storm repairs took months reaching generally high standards but continuing losses plagued Coastal NC resulting essentially in attrition rates for Army veteran occupations highest among any region ). Holly Springs, North Carolina was founded in 1837 by James A. Polk and his wife Julia Boggs Polk. The city is located in the Cherokee Nation, and it is home to the Holly Springs Museum of Art and History as well as the Holly Springs Community Center. The city was originally named for Colonel John C. Brockman, who served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1925, the city name was changed to honor Dr. Franklin P. Cobb, a physician and member of North Carolina's House of Representatives from 1915-1925. The town began to grow when it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad for slaves escaping to freedom in 1838. Over time, Holly Springs grew into a major center for education and commerce within Cherokee Nation until World War II destroyed much of that infrastructure. Afterward, Holly Springs growth slowed until 1990 when it again experienced rapid expansion due to new development around the intersection of Highway 288 and Interstate 95A. Today, Holly Springs has become one of America's fastest-growing cities with over 100,000 residents and continues to be a vibrant community striving for quality education and economic opportunity for its citizens

Holly Springs was founded in 1775 by the Raleigh family. The town was named for a Holly tree that grew near the house of John Cary, one of the founders of Raleigh. The Carys donated land to the town and also built a log courthouse. In 1846, Holly Springs became the county seat of Rutherford County and is still its primary business center.
