High Point was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1792 and became an important transportation center for the region. In 1875, High Point hosted the first interracial Loving v. Virginia wedding in U.S. history when white and black couples were married at a plantation near Lake Norman. The economy of High Point is based on commerce and agriculture; some of the more notable businesses include Jell-O Enterprises Inc., Coca Cola Bottling Company, Tyson Foods Inc., and Prentiss Rubber & Tire Co.. The town has experienced many economic changes over its history including two periods of heavy industry: during World War II when local industries produced munitions for the war effort and after Hurricane Floyd struck in 1999 which destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown High Point.
