In 1968, the Town of High Point received a Naval Shipyard Battalion from Pensacola, Florida as a gesture of friendship and support. As part of this deployment, Rear Admiral William Halsey visited High Point and presented a plaque honoring Navy sailors who had served in Vietnam. It is the second most populous municipality in Cabarrus County after Concord. The townsite of High Point was first settled by native Americans in 1772 as part of the Neutral Grounds Treaty. The area now encompassing High Point was surveyed and opened for settlement by Major General James Mooney on February 20, 1815 as part of his expedition against Native American territory east of Raleigh. named for Major General John C. Highsmith who had served with distinction during the War of 1812 and had been appointed colonelcommanding a brigade under Brigadier General George Pemberton at Fort Bragg in March 1814 The town began to takes form around 1800 when two brothers – Nathaniel and John Overstreet – purchased land from William Mecklenburg and started farming it. In 1807 Nathaniel built what became known as "New Town Hall" which still stands today on Main Street. The Oversteppers donated land to be developed into a township which would include their farmlands; this township would later become High Point Township (the same name as the current town). In 1830 Nathaniel's son Robert built "Masonic Temple" on present day Elmwood Avenue just south of courthouse square whereinitially worshiped local masons before they moved to Morehead City in 1865 In 1840 two men by the names of Storey and Townsend bought some more land from Mecklenburgs; this land became known as "Township Park". They laid out streets and divided up their holdings into lots which were sold off until only about 1890 when all but one lot remained unsold because it was too close to other homes or businesses In 1853 a group of farmers formed a company called Red River Navigation Company to build a road from Elizabethtown (now Burlington) north to Kinston along what is now US Route 1 . This road eventually became known as Old Highway 190 . The first store located in High Point was primarily an agricultural store run by Ebenezer Denton called Denton's Store . It burned down in 1850 but soon afterwards another store, Wagon Wheel Inn , opened nearby and continued operation until 1870 In 1861 Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Fort Moultrie while they were encamped northeast of town; Union forces repelled the attack resulting in several casualties among Confederate forces including Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest During World War I (1914-1918), High Point furnished hospital support for soldiers deployed along both front lines including activities such as laundry and cooking facilities In 1927 substantial damage caused by Hurricane Floyd resulted in total loss of property valued at $8000 making HighPoint one of the most affected municipalities during that particular event On October 4th, 2007 Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Lowndes County Moorestown causing extensive damage there totaling over $100 million dollars within impacts such as lost crops, power outages lasting days or weeks, flooding throughout much portionsof central NC , barns/houses destroyed or damaged beyond repair . There have been multiple recovery efforts with assistance coming from both state government agencies such as NCDOT highway crews working alongside private companies such as Home Depot contractors who have worked extensively cleaning up aftermath including removing any remaining debris
