High Point is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,550 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County and the principal city of High Point Township. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is located in High Point. The first Europeans to visit what is now High Point were French traders in 1612 who named it "Chapel Hill" after their bishop's house there. In 1714, English settlers arrived and named it "Highpoint". The original log courthouse was built in 1824 on College Street by John Fayette Carruth Jr.. In 1892, Post Office No. 2 replaced the original building. In 1865, high school students from Durhamville rioted over low tuition rates at UNC-Duke; governor Andrew Johnson called for martial law and ordered all schools closed until further notice. A group of young men gathered around two draft horses that had been brought into the town for transportation to Raleigh, Abercrombie County, Kentucky—the only time such an event had ever occurred in High Point history—and began throwing stones and bottles at passing cars while six people were arrested and transported back to Duke University where they awaited trial. This led to public outcry against what was seen as a disregard for local rule and set off a series of protests throughout the state culminating with a march on Raleigh on April 12th which ended with 10 arrests and $2 million damage done to property including three churches

Pemberton, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then founded Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1881, High Point became a city with its own government and police department. The population of High Point peaked at around 100 people in 1920 but dropped to about 50 people by 1960.
