In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces camped at nearby Pee Dee Landing while they awaited an Invasion Force led by Confederate General Jubal Early to cross the Catawba River into North Carolina from Georgia. When news arrived that Early had been killed near Augusta, Georgia, Union forces advanced rapidly towards Pee Dee Landing seeking revenge for his death. On July 4th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell's army reached High Point and attacked Union troops under Colonel John Bell Hood who repulsed them with heavy losses inflicted on both sides before withdrawing back across the river without crossing successfully or attacking again. This battle is considered to be one of the earliest successful uses of artillery against human beings and has been called "the high point" of Confederate operations against Union forces due to its strategic importance along Interstate 95 where many battles were fought later that year including First Battle Of Bull Run which resulted in Confederate loss but also helped define military strategy for future conflicts

High Point is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chapel Hill–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "High Point" comes from a height of over 200 feet (60 m). The first settler in High Point was Isaac Hendrickson in 1778. He and his family built their home on what is now called Hendrickson's Corner. In 1827, John Cramer established a gristmill and sawmill at what is now known as Cameron Mill Road and renamed it High Point Grist & Saw Mills Incorporated. By 1840, there were six stores in High Point with a population of 100. A post office was established here in 1847, and by 1860 there were twelve stores with a population of 2,000+. In 1861 the first railroad reached High Point with the Eastern Railroad Company's line from Greensboro to Hendersonville via Rutherfordton and Durham. This line connected high-population areas outside of Durham County for the first time. At this time early residents developed an industry based around agriculture: raising cotton, hay, cattle and pigs; processing timber; manufacturing goods such as bricks; and selling products locally or through private companies like Appalachian Telephone & Telegraph Co., First National Bank of HighPoint etcetera
