The first Europeans to visit High Point were Captain John Smith and his men in 1607. In 1851, Colonel James A. Bogue built what is now known as Bogue's Mill on high ground just outside of town. For many years this mill functioned as one of High Point's largest employers and source of income. In 1902, General Ulysses S. Grant visited High Point while campaigning for president and called it "the most beautiful place I ever saw". In 1865, Union general Jubal Early arrived in High Point with orders to attack Confederate forces stationed there fortifications known as Fort Fisher. Early was successful in crossing the river but was fatally wounded by a cannonball near where he later erected a monument to his success at Fort Fisher Museum today - only two miles from downtown High Point! After General Early's death, his army came under siege from Confederate forces at Fort Fisher for several days before withdrawing successfully across the river back into Virginia without loss to either side.. In 1895, during construction on Interstate 85 through Durham County, workers discovered an ancient white oak tree growing along US 11 south of town; they named it "Old World" after its discovery! Today Old World can be found standing proud throughout much of downtown HighPoint- including around City Hall (which served as both their office and museum until 1974), Broadway between Main Street and State Street (now home to Hightower University), Locust Avenue east thereof between Church Street and Broadwalk (now home to Magee-Wright Automotive). Today High Point is an attractive location for businesses due its proximity to shopping malls such as Duke Energy Stadium/NCAA basketball games or UNC Charlotte football games; recent expansions include new parks such as PNC Arena or Carrboro Beach Park; restaurants like Anson Mills Brewing Company or Ruby Tuesday offer delicious food options close by; nightlife options available with bars operating all day long including local breweries like Blackwater beers or 20th Amendment Spirits & Rum distillery right next door (and more); main street provideswalk access Enjoying plenty year round activities like golfing or fishing can also be enjoyed nearby if desired

High Point, North Carolina is a town in Cullowhee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,478 at the 2010 census. It is the home of UNC Chapel Hill and the High Point Military Academy. The first settler in this area was John White in 1797. The first store was built on what is now High Point Boulevard in 1801 by Ector Cooks. In 1827, General James Aiken established what became known as Aiken's Landing on Roanoke Island which was the site of later College Park and High Point Mall. In 1868, Colonel Thomas J. Campbell purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) around present-day High Point from Jack Balfour for $2 million dollars (). He named it "Campbell's Addition" after himself and donated it to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1870–72 General Beecher Anderson fought his last battle against Native Americans at Hiwassee River Bridge about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of present-day HighPoint along Hiwassee Creek. This event helped begin Reconstruction in America and also served as a turning point for many African Americans who had been working away from view since before passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964%. More than 100 black students were enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill during these early years; they would eventually form an all-black football team that played its first game in 1915 under coach Hugh Glassman. During World War II, High Point was one of 131 towns located within Iraq during Operation Overlord (), leading to increased military activity around town center including some instances where residents were placed into concentration camps because their homes or businesses could not be used for military purposes (). After Saddam Hussein's ouster in 2003 he abandoned most aspects of socialism inside Iraq but highpoint continued to experience insurgent activity until late 2007 when violence died down significantly

The town was founded by refugees from South Carolina during the American Civil War. It was first called New Market and then High Point. The townsite became part of Granville County on March 12, 1871. In 1894, High Point built the first school in Granville County. In 1902, it also built the first hospital in the county. In 1951, High Point built its own prison after being refused permission to use a local jail. On February 5, 1984, HighPoint's Main Street was renamed "Driscoll Boulevard" in honor of Senator Jesse Latham Driscoll of NC (D-Highpoint). On October 2nd of that year Hurricane Floyd made landfall in central North Carolina and damaged much of High Point including most of the town's infrastructure; however no loss or damage occurred to any homes within or around High Point itself as many other communities near Floyd's path did not sustain significant damage or loss either property or people
