The history of the Hickory Police Department began in 1892 when a group of men from Hickory, North Carolina decided to form a law enforcement organization. The first officer in the department was S.H. King and he served for one year. In 1893, A.F. Smith joined the department and he served until 1896 when Wm.Kenton became the first African American officer on the force. From 1897-1902, Jno Flemming served as Chief of Police before becoming Assistant Chief in 1902. After retiring from the force, Flemming taught law enforcement at Samford University for three years before his death in 1924. In 1925, Harry Steedman became Assistant Chief and he would serve until 1936 when he was succeeded by John Gentry who would serve until 1941 when he retired due to ill health. After Gentry’s retirement, William Beavers took over as assistant chief until 1949 when Beavers resigned due to illness prior to taking over as permanentChief which he would do for three years before his death in 1951. Leland Jordan became temporary Chief after Beavers’ death while Don Shuford took over as permanentChief from 1951-1958 during which time police service was merged with that of Wilmington Township police department making Hickory its only town within a township limits jurisdiction (the other two being Gastonia and Knoxville). In 1958, Shuford left office after serving four terms as Chief and was replaced by Clyde Dillard who would serve for six terms before retiring effective December 31st 1984 following a term that saw increased crime rates throughout the city during his tenure including an increase of more than 100% in murders committed within city limits alone! After Dillard’s retirement, there were several changes with new officers coming on board such as Howie Hinton who served from 1985-1987; Don Kautz who served from 1988-1991; Monte Coleman who served from 1992-1994; Wayne Burchill whoserved from 1995-1997; Dan Bryantwhoservedfrom1998-2001; Tim Hardinwhoservedfrom2002-2004; Steve Laughlinwhoservedfrom2005-2007and2008–2011—and most recently Darrell Glasscock who has been with us since January 1st 2012! During these recent years we have seen many new technologies added such as body cameras which are currently being used by our detectives throughout our city! We also continue to make strides towards creating better relationships with our citizens through programs like “Hickory Nights Out” where we work together with businesses throughout the city to provide entertainment for their guests while they are trying to reduce crime!

They set out from Raleigh and arrived at Mount Pisgah on December 3rd, 1814. glasscock's grandson James Tatum became the first settler of Hickory Township on February 1st, 1827 The first store built in what is now known as Hickory was called "Fenton's" which opened its doors on October 14th, 1830 On March 15th of that year, Andrew Jarrell built a cabin near present day intersection of US 19 and NC 221 Jarrell later moved to what is now downtown Hickory where he started to cultivate tobacco crops . He also built a large home which served as the seat of government for much of this time until it burned down in 1865 . The building still stands today , though much reduced in size due to fire damage In 1836-37 David Humphreys organized a group of farmers to purchase land east of present day US 19/NC 221 for their new township formcalled Stonecreek Stonecreek grew slowly until it gained recognition as one of the most promising townships west of Charlotte when representatives from both townships met at Fayetteville on November 25th,, 1838 to discuss boundaries
