Hickory is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Hickory is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Gaston County were French colonists who arrived there in 1664-1667. A group of Englishmen also landed and founded Gastonia on the Catawba River about miles (1 km) upstream from present-day Hickory. In 1729, surveyors named the site "Hickory" after an old growth hickory tree that they observed growing near their landing site. On July 12, 1785, General James Johnston's Confederate forces attacked a Union military detachment led by Colonel John Hunter at White Oak Swamp while Lt. Colonel James Johnston was leading the attack from within his own company of infantryman (the "Crazy Horse"), resulting in one of the most dramatic battles ever fought in North Carolina during the American Revolution. The Union force numbered more than 100 men but lost only six killed and thirteen wounded; Confederate losses were much higher with over fifty soldiers killed or wounded including Johnston himself. Captain Elijah Broughton reported that he personally shot two Yankee officers as they lay dying on the battlefield: one dead and one captured; this earned him fame as Custer's Killer because it is considered to be one of history's most audacious acts of bravery under fire. In 1802 Hickory was chartered as a town bylaws providing for its election as a township seat with magistrates being elected by popular vote rather than appointment from among members of the town council or board of trustees which had been appointed by Governor Andrew Johnson when Hickory was created a city Limits Town on November 3, 1801 pursuant to Act No., 2nd Session of State Legislatures approved December 7th, 1800 (). On February 5th 1805 a newAct No., 3rd Session approved March 4th granted city limits status to Hickory City according to Act No., 4th Session Laws Passed June 26th 1806 (). As per charter amendment #2 passed November 10th 1905 referendum all citizens over 21 years old are required to pay taxes regardless if they live in other municipalities within Gaston County or not - making Hickory one municipality subject to state tax laws & regulations just like any other municipality located inside “The State” – see www.gastoncountygov website for more information). A post office called Hicksville established on October 24, 1861, and closed on September 30, 1965; its mailing address has been changed several times since then (most recently 9707 Woodlawn Drive). The name change may have been attributable to Julius Caesar McCoy Sr.'s purchase[sic] of land along Interstate 85 which became known as McCoy Road outside downtown Hickory before it intersected US 74/US 421 Business Loop eastbound just south of downtown where McCoy Road turned into I-485/I-485 Business Loop today
