The history of the Air Force Deployed Gift program began with World War II. The United States had become involved in the war, and needed to provide supplies and personnel for the fight. The Army was already providing soldiers and equipment, but the Navy was not so far behind. After the war, Congress created a program called “The Overseas Expeditionary Fund” in order to provide military members and their families with gifts during peacetime. This fund provided for items such as food, clothing, toys, and other goodies from various countries that were fighting in or connected to the war. In 1946, Congress created a new program to allow service members to send gifts home to their loved ones during wartime. This program became known as “The Overseas sending Gift Program” or OSGP. It allowed service members who were stationed overseas to donate items such as clothes, books, movies, etc., which would then be sent back home with love and care. In 1980, Congress renamed this program “the Air Force Deployed Gift Program” or AFDP. The AFDP allows airmen who are stationed overseas to send gift baskets filled with necessities back home with love and care for their friends and family member(s). The AFDP has been a valuable resource for both troops and civilians alike over the years. It has allowed people from all walks of life to feel appreciated when they receive something special from an airman or member of the military. From small changes like giving someone a new shirt at an army base store instead of just throwing them one away (or even free!), through larger gestures like sending a basket filled with groceries back home on Christmas Eve (or any other special day), the AFDP has done an incredible job of bringing smiles all across America!

Hickory is a small town in the state of North Carolina, located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Raleigh. The population was 1,841 at the 2010 census. Hickory was founded in 1792 by General James Robertson and named for the hickory tree that grew nearby. In 1826, Hickory became a part of what is now Charlotte, North Carolina. The first settler in Hickory was John Negro who arrived there in 1792. He and his family were followed by James Robertson who built a log cabin on the present-day site of Hickory in 1794. The original house still stands today as a museum piece. In 1826, HickORY became part of what is now Charlotte when it merged with other towns within the new state ofNorth Carolina. In 1851, it again became its own separate town when its government changed from proprietorship to municipal government. The most notable event associated with Hickory during this time period was the Battle of Piney Branch which took place on October 10th1871 between Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell and Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant near Piney Branch Creek north-northwest of town limits.- This battle resulted in heavy casualties among both sides and numerous homes being destroyed or damaged along with many trees destroyed orchards that supplied much needed revenue to both armies during Reconstruction era.�
