Henderson is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. It has been called the "Gateway to the Appalachian Mountains" for its location on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. The first Europeans to visit Henderson were two French traders, Jean Baptiste de la Bodegorry and Pierre De La Varenne, who landed on NC coast in 1735. Henderson was named after Captain John Henderson of HMS Beagle who explored the Atlantic Ocean's coasts between 1739 and 1741. In 1819 Samuel Fenton built a sawmill and grist mill near present day downtown Hendersonville which became an important part of local commerce. In 1892 The Presbyterian Church designated Henderson as their church district including all of Henderson County excepting parts of Crispstown and Tellico Townships which joined Rutherford County soon thereafter. This change enabled Presbyterians to have a presence in all aspects of life in what had been until then agricultural communities with few people other than farmers or militia members living there. A post office called Henderson was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1959. The town began receiving mail from Winston-Salem from 1865 through 1905 when that city experienced an increase in mail volume due to railroad growth within its boundaries However, most mail stopped arriving here around 1915 because Norfolk Southern discontinued service along their line into eastern North Carolina during World War I; this also caused a decrease in trade between Hendersonville and Winston-SalemRutherford Counties (now Pickens County).
