The Guards were initially used for internal security and garrison duty; however, from the outset they were intended as a permanent corps of defense against any potential French or British invasions. From their inception, the Guards have been considered an important part of American society. They have played an instrumental role in both World War I and World War II: in 1915, when President Woodrow Wilson ordered the organization into service without solicitation from state legislatures, and again in 1940 when they helped swell America's military response to Pearl Harbor. In each instance, the Guardsman mobilized quickly and effectively and played an important role in enhancing America's defenses. Today, there are over 6 million National Guard soldiers serving throughout America – including 1 million who are stationed at home - making them one of the most diverse and powerful forces guarding our Nation's interests. Their unique history is reflective of their role as protectors of democracy itself: through training, drill,and mobilization these men and women provide valuable service that strengthens our country both domestically AND abroad.

Henderson, North Carolina is located in the Eastern Panhandle of the United States and it is part of the Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Henderson is an agricultural community that produces crops such as corn, soybeans, rice and wheat. Other industries include manufacturing, transportation and trade. The town has a small shopping district and a post office which opened on July 1, 1875. Henderson is named after James Swayne Henderson who donated land to the town. The first store in Henderson was built by John Aiken in 1881. The town was established on what are now known as State Route 321 and State Route 601 (later US-421). In 1907, when US-421 was routed through the area from Charlotte to Apex, Henderson became part of this new routing. At that time it had a population of about 100 people but by 1920 it had grown to 350 people thanks to various businesses opening up in the area including a grocery store and three banks. By 1930 there were six stores and 12 businesses in Henderson with a population of 3200 people according to census records. During World War II Henderson served as one of two military airfields in southern North Carolina used for training pilots from other states during World War II. On October 13th 1945 local residents were notified by radio that Japanese bombers had bombed their community killing 24 people and wounding many others with over 150 injuries according to news reports at the time On May 4th 1951 local residents learned via television that their county seat Raleigh had been captured by Japan following its surrender just four days earlier In 1965 Richardson Boulevard was completed connecting Henderson with Raleigh giving citizens easier access to jobs in Raleigh while also bypassing downtown which still utilized horse drawn carriages for transportation then later buses
Henderson, North Carolina was founded in 1735 by Captain John Henderson. The town was named after Henderson's father-in-law, Colonel James Johnston. Henderson's first store opened in 1739. The township was formed in 1760 and the village in 1772. In 1809, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1868 when it became a part of Greensboro County.
