Henderson, North Carolina is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population of Henderson was 3,853 as of the 2010 census. The town is home to the Henderson Volunteer Fire Department and the Henderson Middle School. Henderson was first settled in 1838 by two families from Scotland. The name Henderson comes from a local creek that flows through the town. A post office called Henderson was established in 1864, and it remained in operation until 1963. The first store in Henderson opened its doors on May 1, 1865, and it was known as the First Store & Mercantile Co. The store operated for about forty years. In 1907, John Hargrave built what is now known as the Hargrave House on Main Street. It served as a social center for many years until it burned down in 1987. In 1957, Grady High School became Henderson Middle School after being founded by Mrs. Florence Ladds (1893-1969). Mrs. Ladds had been instrumental in establishing Grady High School as an educational institution that would provide opportunities for students from all walks of life to attend school together. Mrs. Ladds also donated land to build the current school campus which began construction in 1959.. A new high school building was completed in 1982 and named Grady Senior High School after Mrs. Ladds' grandson,. It serves both as Henderson's primary high school and also provides education for children who may not be able to attend other schools due to their location or economic status.. In 1993,Grady Intermediate Unit 2 merged with adjacent Eastover Elementary School to form Grady Intermediate Unit 3 which continues to serve students within its boundaries today.. Finally, during Hurricane Floyd (1999), portions of Handytown were destroyed including most ofMrsLadds gift land which formed part of Grady Intermediate Unit 2 . After much discussion among citizens and representatives from neighboring townships about what should be done with this property given that no one wanted it developed into another commercial center ,the Board voted 6-1 on September 15th 2001to approve demolition of most if not all ofMrsLaddS buildings including her stables since they were considered unsafe following storm damage . Today only her original pump house remains standing..

In 1735, he established a trading post at what is now called Round Top. Captain John Henderson's post became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and many refugees from the south were able to find safety here. In 1881, a store and restaurant were built on the original location of the trading post. This building still stands today and is used as a museum. Henderson County was created in 1868 from parts of Davidson and Rutherford counties. It became one of the most prosperous counties in North Carolina during its early years. Today, Henderson offers many opportunities for recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, swimming and golfing. There are also several small businesses located throughout the county which provide vital services to residents.
In 1814, Henderson was founded by Major James Caldwell Henderson and his wife, Rebecca. The town became a post office in 1825 and a county seat in 1865. Henderson was named for General James Hennon, who fought in the American Civil War.
