Henderson, North Carolina is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Henderson was founded in 1792 by Captain John Henderson and his family. The first store in Henderson opened in 1807. In 1814, Congress passed the First National Bank Act, which created the first national bank in America in Henderson. The bank became part of the NC Banking Company and conducted banking operations until it merged with Jardine & Co., Ltd., a Britishbank, on October 15, 1907. On July 12, 1912, Henderson's post office reopened after being closed for four years due to fire damage from a tornado that struck nearby Greensboro on May 6th of that year. The community has experienced several economic downturns over the years; however they have bounced back each time thanks to their entrepreneurial spirit and tough competition from other towns within Vance County. In recent years there has been an effort to revitalize downtown Henderson with new businesses and restaurants as well as a proposed light rail system that would connect downtown with uptown Charlotte (the city limits of which are just beyond town).
