Henderson, North Carolina is a town in eastern Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Henderson Volunteer Fire Department has been serving Henderson since 1872. The town was founded by settlers who came from Scotland in the early 1800s. Henderson's first post office opened in 1825. The name of the town was chosen because of its location on "Henderson Hill" which overlooked the main road between Charlotte and Petersburg. In 1860, citizens voted to change the name to Henderson after General Nathaniel Henderson, an American Civil War hero and Union general who had served in South Carolina and Georgia before joining forces with General Ulysses S. Grant during the war. Henderson, North Carolina is located in the state of North Carolina. The population as of the 2010 census was 9,871. Henderson is a small town located in western Henderson County. It is bordered by Fayetteville to the east and west, and Statesboro to the north. Henderson was founded on December 12, 1835 by James Henton and his wife Martha Nance Henton. It became an incorporated town on February 15, 1876. The first post office in Henderson was established on July 1, 1836 under the name of Orangeburgh. In 1880, it had a population of 553 and a school system with seventeen schools. By 1910, there were 10 businesses in Henderson and its population had grown to 14 businesses with a total payroll of $1 million.
