Henderson is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,040 at the 2010 census. It was named for Henderson Davis, a Revolutionary War veteran and founder of the town. Henderson is located on the eastern edge of Carteret County and is bordered by New Bern to the west and Concordia to the east. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Henderson were Frenchmen who arrived there in 1669. They named it "Henderson" after Captain John Henderson of HMS Victory who had led an expedition against Spanish forces in Carolina Bay during King James I's war with Spain. In 1736, Colonel George Washington sent a detachment of troops under General Nathanael Greene to establish a post at what is now Hickory Hill (now part of downtown Henderson). After spending several months there skirmishing with Native Americans, they discovered that this area would be ideal for growing rice because it had good soil and dry seasons. In 1737 they began cultivating rice and soon afterwards erected a stockade around their new post which became known as Fort Washington (later Fort Raleigh). In 1743-44 General William Howe invaded North Carolina from Canada and burned down much of Raleigh before relieving General Howe at Yorktown near Poquoson Creek. As part of his campaign he destroyed many homes in Durham County including Fort Washington which locals attributed to its capture by Howe rather than any strategic value since it lay on one side of an open field close to friendly Indian villages. This event helped Modoc Indians gain fame as raiders throughout North Carolina due to their destruction spree during those days when British posts were common targets for attack by unprovoked bands of Indians living off land grants given them by English settlers! 1/4 mile south-west from present day intersection State Highway 11 & US 19 sits original site where fort warded off Canadian invasion 18th century

Henderson, North Carolina is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Henderson were Spanish settlers in 1665. In 1718, John Henderson purchased land from the Cherokee people and erected a small cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1729, he had founded a trading post near present day South Boulevard and Henderson Avenue. In 1802, President James Kenedy commissioned Surveyor General William Leland to survey the area that would eventually become Henderson County. Leland's map of 1803 showed Indian trails running through what is now Henderson County and included two small villages: One on the east side of South Boulevard and one on the west side of Henderson Avenue. The first store in downtown Henderson opened in 1813 by Jeremiah Southerland II with assistance from his brother-in-law Samuel Goudreau. Over time, other stores followed suit until Downtown became an urban center with several blocks of commercial buildings along Main Street between First and Second Streets in 1830. The original courthouse was built between 1830-1831 on Market Street across from where Bank of America stands today (now home to PNC Arena). In 1836, Confederate soldiers under General Robert Easley burned down Unionist homes in downtown Henderson while retreating from nearby Fort Fisher during the Battle of Nags Head swamp campaign. The damage done caused great financial losses for both sides but no injuries were reported as a result of this attack which helped further solidify Davidson County's pro-Confederate sentiment at the time. A fire destroyed most of downtown during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; however, some businesses such as J & W Barber Shop reopened soon after because they could not find insurance or funding for replacement building materials After Reconstruction ended many businesses closed due to high taxes which made it difficult for new entrepreneurs to enter into business competition; however, Jeremiah Southerland III reopened Dillard’s department store as it sat abandoned until it was sold to Steinway Piano Company who moved it back into use as an opera house before finally demolishing it in 1978 and selling it back to city government for use as office space Downtown experienced another resurgence starting around 1990 when newly Developed areas such as Annandale began popping up all over town giving hope that old buildings might be preserved; however these days most older buildings are either abandoned or used for storage by local businesses vacated by larger companies
Henderson was founded in 1786 by John Henderson and is the oldest town in North Carolina. Henderson was named after Captain John Henderson who explored the area in 1785. The first post office was opened in 1811 and Henderson became a city in 1868. In 1915, Henderson was renamed to honor General James B. Stuart and it has since been known as the General James B. Stuart City Council District.
