The Henderson Volunteer Infantry was organized on November 15, 1861, in Henderson County. It was the first Confederate regiment to be raised in Henderson County. The regiment served under General J.B. Stuart during the Civil War and earned three battle stars and a commendation from President Abraham Lincoln for its bravery and patriotism. In 1865, the Henderson Volunteers were mustered out of service and disbanded. Today, the Henderson Volunteer Infantry Museum is located in Hendersonville and preserves the history of this important Confederate unit. The museum includes artifacts from the regiment as well as exhibits on military history in general and Henderson County specifically. The museum also provides educational opportunities for local students as well as visitors who are interested in learning about this important part of American history.

The primary economic activity in Henderson is manufacturing; however, there are also several small businesses that provide services to the community. Henderson is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Henderson was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1907. The original Henderson Creek settlers were farmers who arrived from Virginia around 1800. They cleared land and built homes on the creek until they exhausted their resources in 1852, when they moved to what is now Henderson Township. For many years, Henderson was known as "the small town on the creek." In 1907, Henderson became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people. By 1970, its population had shrunk to 7,691 people due to suburbanization and other economic factors. However, there has been recent growth in Henderson thanks to new businesses and infrastructure development such as the planned community of Carytown which opened in 2013.
Henderson was founded in 1784 by J.D. Henderson and his wife Lucy. It became a town in 1838, and was named for Henderson's father-in-law, Dr. John Sutherlin. In 1862, the Union army destroyed the fortifications of Henderson and forced the surrender of Confederate General Jubal Early. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1860s as cotton plantations were developed nearby. Henderson was incorporated as a city in 1905 and grew rapidly into an important commercial center with two hospitals, three schools, and several businesses including a hospital nursery. By 1920, Henderson had over 50 stores and had become known for its local foods such as ham hocks and pickled peppers. The city went through tough times during World War II but regained its status as an important economic center after the war ended. The population reached 100,000 by 1970 but declined to 80,000 by 2000 due to increased development outside of Hendersonville
