The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Henderson, North Carolina began in 1947. The USAF activated the 5th Bomb Wing at Hickory Army Air Field to serve as a unit providing airlift and bombardment services during World War II. In 1949, the wing was redesignated the 4th Bomb Wing and moved from Hickory to Garland AFB, Texas. From Garland, the wing provided strategic bombardment of Japan during World War II. The 4th BW also flew reconnaissance missions over South Korea during that time period. In 1951, the wing was transferred to Carswell AFB located in Dallas County, Texas where it served as a Strategic Aerospace Command bomber squadron untilactivated on 16 October 1957. With its assets reduced by host country politics and economic sanctions following the Korean War, elements of the 4 BW redeployed to Holloman AFB located near Alamogordo NM on 1 November 1957 as part of Operation Little Eagle which brought back veterans of that conflict for summer training while NORAD prepared for Cold War wars with Cuba and Communist Vietnam. On 15 February 1961, one month after activation at Holloman AFB by General Curtis LeMay as Commander Ninth Air Force (Air Defense), Headquarters USAF organized two subordinate commands: First Lieutenant Colonel Edward J Fenton's Tactical Aerospace Command (TAC) which would be responsible for all Tactical Bomber/Aerospace Forces activities; Second Lieutenant Colonel Clarence N Thomas' Fighter-Bomber Command (FBC) would be responsible for all fighter-bomber operations within TAC boundaries This change created an organizational structure which would continue through most subsequent deployments worldwide with one major exception: Tactical Airlift Command (TACA) would become operational on 2 April 1969 when Headquarters USAF activated it under First LtCol Robert H Wright's command from Headquarters Continental US Military Forces Europe - Mediterranean Theater Commands (HUMCOM). This new organization constituted another minor organizational change within USAF because TACA had been concurrently operating out of RAF Fairford since late 1966 as part of NATO's European Task Force - Aviation Mission Support Element (ETEMSA). ETEMSA had originally been established when NATO assumed control ofaircraft assets previously operated by RAF Stradishall Heath AB in England following its dissolution as a result of American military action against North Vietnam - this action resulted in 13 aircraft being lost including six jet bombers sent down behind enemy lines over Laos on 18 September 1965 while en route from London Eglin AF to Pattaya AB dropping napalm on North Vietnamese forces besieging Saigon; later that year ETEMSA increased its size when RAF Boscombe Down became available with four Boeing 707s converted into tanker/bombardment planes used primarily for strike support mission against targets inside North Vietnam while also conducting aerial refueling flights between Thailand and NATO bases inside South Vietnam; both Etemsa and HUMEUR were discontinued effective 30 June 1973 upon withdrawal from European Theater commands First Lieutenant Colonel Edward J Fenton's Tactical Aerospace Command took control of all Tactical Bomber/Aerospace Forces activities within TAC boundaries on 2 April 1969 when HQ USAF activated it under First LtCol Robert H Wright's command from Headquarters Continental US Military Forces Europe - Mediterranean Theater Commands Second Lieutenant Colonel Clarence N Thomas' Fighter-BomberCommand became responsible for all fighter-bomber operations within TAC boundaries As a result of these organizational changes Allied airpower played an increasingly important role throughout Southeast Asia beginning with Operations Rolling Thunder and Phantom Thunder which started occurring more frequently after Midway On 22 July 1970 followed by Operation Linebacker I on 20 August 1970 . The first settlers in Henderson County were James Fenton and his family who arrived in 1799 from Maryland. They built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River and named their new settlement after themselves, "Henderson". In 1819 they moved to what is now known as Greeneville and began to trade with Indians. At this time Henderson County was part of Davidson County.
