Havelock is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Randolph County. Havelock was founded in 1811 by Scots-Irish settlers who had come to the area after experiencing religious and political persecution in Ireland. The community of Havelock was platted in 1811 by James Aiken, a delegate from adjoining Cherokee County. In 1830, John Coody donated land to form the town block; this property now includes most of downtown Havelock and parts of the eastern edge of town around Mrs. Park's Mill (now days known as First Baptist Church). In 1853, John Blythe donated land for a school which became State Normal School #1 on May 10th that same year. On October 1st 1860, North Carolina designated Havelock as the "capital" for Randolph County because Raleigh had been ravaged by fire that year and much of what remained standing in Durham and other northcentral counties was destroyed or burned down. On December 12th 1865 General Jubal Early led an attack against Confederate forces near Unionville during his failed attempt to cross into Virginia over the Nashoba River before being driven back southward towards Petersburg along with most of his army under General Robert Ewell. This attack resulted in one hundred casualties on both sides with thirty-four dead among Early's command including Commander-in-Chief Ulysses S Grant who ordered his troops not to participate due to fears they would become casualties as well if engaged against numerically superior Confederate forces while supplies were available elsewhere across South Carolina only minutes away! The townspeople were so upset about this turn of events that they voted unanimously not to allow early voting for future elections due to fear another such event would happen again should Republicans gain control of government! Havelock has experienced many changes throughout its history: it lost its post office status twice (1896 and 2002) but has been reborn as an active community thanks to various businesses starting up within its walls over time: first Craftsman Furniture Outlet located on Main Street from 1978 until 1992 then Dollar Tree which replaced them in 2006 followed by American Eagle Outlet which opened up on Court Street just west of downtown in late 2007 following Hurricane Irene who damaged much storefront business within blocks radius around downtown including Olde Hickory grocery store which closed Business Development Authority member Lamar Smith successfullySave Our Specialty Centers Inc.) Finally finally Post Office Square reopened on September 15th 2009 after having been closed since 2005 due to low sales volume combined with high costs associated with reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Floyd
