The Havelock Army National Guard was activated in 1917 as a part of the United States First World War effort. Although initially composed of federal troops, the Guardsmen soon became renowned for their bravery and heroism in The Great War. During The Second World War, the Hagen Military Reserve battalion was re-raised and eventually became the nucleus of what is now the North Carolina Army National Guard. After The war, many Havelock men served in various branches of the military throughout Cold War operations. However, it was during Operation Neptune's Spear – which led to the withdrawal of American forces from South East Asia – that most Havelock men distinguished themselves on deployment. Today, there are over 1,500 members of the North Carolina Army National Guard based in Havelock - making it one of America's largest army units. Although small by world standards, there has been an ongoing tradition of giving back to our military through donations and support dating back to at least 1916 when local farmers offered goods and services free to soldiers stationed in town during World War I. The Havelock, North Carolina Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The unit was formed in 1775 and fought in the war against British forces. In 1827, the North Carolina militia was raised as part of the Union army and served in the Mexican-American War. After the war, the unit was disbanded but was reactivated in 1899 as part of Reconstruction in South Carolina. In 1915, it seceded from South Carolina and joined the Union army under General John F. Kennedy during World War I. The Havelock Army National Guard played a major role during World War II and participated in campaigns such as liberation of France and Sicily. It also served on occupation duty after 1945. Today, there are around 350Havelock soldiers serving with various units across America including unitnaires stationed at Fort Bragg, Jacksonville Beach, Brunswick County Naval Station and Camp Lejeune.
Havelock is a town located in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,190 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Havelock arrived in 1792 and named it after General Edward Braddock's army which had invaded North Carolina during the American Revolution. The town was platted in 1814 when commissioners from Wake County decided to move their county seat from Salisbury to Havelock because of its strategic location on two ridges that separated Craven County from Johnston County to the south and Randolph County to the north. The first settler in what is now Havelock married a woman from Randolph County and they had six children together before moving westward into Johnston and Randolph Counties where they farmed until 1828 when they built a house on Post Road near present-day Rocky Mount. They remained there until 1830 when they moved back eastward into Craven County where he became an attorney and she continued to farm until her death in 1862. She is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Havelock. The townspeople built churches, schools, stores, post office, etc., beginning with one called "New Hope" erected by Methodist Episcopal missionaries circa 1824. A wooden courthouse was erected in 1829; it burned down within months but was replaced by a more permanent structure that still stands today (credits: https://www.flickr.com/photos/78843973@N04/sets/7215760056792536/) In 1865 local resident Phebe King donated land for use as a public square which served as an early center for shopping and evening entertainment for the townspeople during Reconstruction days following the Civil War In 1875 John Witherspoon developed a corn whisky distillery on State Highway 10 about northeast of present-day Havelock While some citizens actually operated distilleries throughout Reconstruction era (eager farmers wanted quick income while living under wartime restrictions), most residents chose not to engage in this type of commerce during these years since doing so would have required them registered with state authorities . After Witherspoon's Dismaland Distillery closed operations around 1888 due primarily to lack of patronage among local residents (itself due largely to prohibitionism ), his son John Witherspoon Jr., who ran the business until his retirement around 1915 also ceased production entirely . On December 5th 1915 nine women workers died as result of gaslighting perpetrated by their boss Charles Huggins following an argument over wages

Havelock is a town in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Roanoke Rapids Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Havelock was founded by Coles and others in 1786 as a trading post on the Yadkin River. The town was named after General George Washington's home state of Virginia, which he had visited while campaigning against British forces during the American Revolution. In 1831, Havelock became a seat of government for Graham County when it was formed from parts of Pisgah and Orange counties. In 1865, it became part of Bladen County when that county was created from parts of Duplin and Person counties. In 1868, HavelockbecamethecapitaloftheNorthCarolinaDepartmentofCommerceandIndustryunderGovernorJohn C Marshall following enactmentofthe North Carolina Consolidated Statutes at its session in Raleigh. On May 20, 1868, Marshall issued an order establishing a Board to manage affairs within Department and changing its name to the State Board for Commerce and Industry with headquarters at Havelock; this board continued to exist until 1901 when it merged into the Departmental Affairs Commission under Governor John E Hardin In 1915-1916 there were two major fire outbreaks in town: one started by Camp Supply officers cook who threw open their barracks while they slept (resulting in several buildings being destroyed) and another started by employees working on White House property who set cookpots on fire (3 buildings were destroyed). Despite these events mill hands not only put out fires but also cleaned up messes made since night before; however some residents felt that Mayor W F Boone should have been more involvedTown Officials called Boone "a Columbia graduate trained as lawyer" rather than an amateur politician who had never worked outside his home constituency Town officials responded with calls for "Mr Attorney General" to be appointed supervisor to clean up township affairs instead Two years later when State Law No 590 was passed regulating hours worked by workers in public works projects mills throughout state new rules about fires were adopted See also: 1913 tornado outbreak
