Havelock is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Havelock was founded in 1792 by Captain John Floyd and his wife, Sally Floyd. In 1837,Captain John Floyd donated land to make up what is now downtown Havelock. The first store in Havelock opened on Market Street in 1839. The town became a city in 1907 and had a population of 34,519 according to the 2000 census. In 2002, it consolidated with Cary to form the Raleigh-Durham Combined Statistical Area which had a total population of over 680,000 as of July 2011 . The town's rich history includes both slave and free life in its early days; notable citizens include General James Longstreet (of Confederate fame), Dragoons Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest and Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Cassius Clay Sr., who were all born hereabouts. A number of important landmarks still stand today including courthouse square where slavery ended and Main Street which leads into downtown from US Highway 50B which run through town center; as well as Hannibal Square across from the high school where Union Genl Pembroke Harnett fought during Sherman's march eastward through NC during 1864; Stonewall Jackson's plantation just outside town limits; Daniel Boone's log cabin near present day Springboro; and most importantly the old mill complex on what once was called "Beach Road" adjacent to present day Willowbrook Drive - one of only two surviving functioning textile mills north of Richmond VA during that time period!
