Greenville, North Carolina is a city located in the Piedmont region ofNorth Carolina. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000 and is projected to reach 150,000 by 2020. Greenville is the economic and cultural center of the state and has been called "the engine room of the South" for its relative importance in both manufacturing and education. The city's rich history can be found from its founding as a small community on Catawba River in 1777 to its current location as an important regional center. The first permanent European settlement in what became North Carolina was made by Captain John Lawson at Salisbury Point on the Yadkin River in 1771. Lawson's colony failed due to lack of support from the local Native Americans, but he continued development at his new post until his death in 1775. In that year, James Moore established another permanent European settlement at Fayetteville on Catawba River after defeating Indian resistance during the Cherokee-American War (1775-1776). Afterward, Virginians began settling throughout present-day North Carolina because of available land and favorable climate conditions. The first major European settlement occurred near what became Greensboro when Scotsman Alexander Macdonald founded a trading post on December 12, 1804, while working for Andrew Jackson during his presidential campaign. In 1809 Orange County was created from parts of Lenoir County west of Interstate 85 and east of Gaston Avenue (now US Highway 421). At this time many people considered Greensboro their home because it lay just beyond their lines of travel publically accessible only by boat or road. However business activities quickly expanded beyond agriculture into transportation and technology with infant railroad companies linking Raleigh with Charleston via Wilmington and Durham before finally reaching Greensboro proper over Live Oak Bridge (present day I-85) just prior to 1840. By 1850 most residents had relocated within present day Wake County - including virtually all businesses along Gaston Avenue - which led directly to current downtown redevelopment patterns evident today around Trade Street/Gaston Ave., Randolph Street/Highway 87/Gaston Ave., Chapel Hill Road/I-40 exit ramp off I-85 South, University Boulevard/Old Milton Parkway/, Broadwalk Shopping Center Factory buildings dating back to 1820 have been replaced or renovated multiple times since then with more recently built condominiums popping up along Trade Street near pedestrian mall entries such as Duke Energy Arena (just northeast), Mallory Square shopping center northwest corner across from Duke Energy Arena also home to several larger chain stores such as Macy’s(northwest corner), Sears(southwest corner), JCPenney( northeast corner ), Kohl’s( southeast corner ), etc.. Despite being continuously redeveloped there are few large intact historic buildings remaining outside Downtown Greensboro without significant restoration work going on currently! In contrast much older neighborhood commercial structures remain largely unchanged obstructing view corridors leading away from downtown traffic volumes making them difficult or impossible rehabilitation or replacement projects!
