Since 1997, GreenSBoro has fielding their own military detachment known as "The Guard" which resides at Lowry Air Force Base and is composed of members from both local law enforcement agencies and federal law enforcement organizations who serve under U.S National Guard Commanders; however no active duty soldiers are stationed here currently. In 1827, Englishman John Randolph bought land in what is now Alamance County from the Catawbas and laid out a town called Randolph's Mills on the south side of High Street within what are today Alma College boundaries. In 1829, when Randolph died, his children sold all their holdings except for three-quarters of a mile (1 km) to David Raynor for $6,000 ($ in 2019). Raynor founded Duke University. In 1860, when Alamance Countysought exemption from state law requiring literacy tests for citizens voting in municipal elections, Governor Andrew Johnson granted it; this act became known as "Johnson's Amendment". The amendment required all states with a suffrage vote to pass similar legislation before allowing voting by mail ballots; this prohibition applied to each individual state until 1967 when Nebraska passed an identical amendment permitting voting by absentee ballots through return postage money orders or certified checkordering only – thus making it possible for more people to vote than ever before without having to go through electoral polls.
