Graham was founded in 1793 by Captain John Graham, an American Revolutionary War veteran and settler. The town currently resides in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Graham is one of the oldest towns in the United States and its history can be found throughout its history. The first residents of Graham were English colonists who arrived in 1793. They built a small farm on the present-day site of Graham after moving from England. The early settlers were interested in agriculture because it allowed them to provide food for their families and sell goods to other settlers. In 1814, Captain George Johnston arrived with his family and began farming the land around Graham. Johnston was a successful farmer and he helped to improve Roads and fences inGraham so that other farmers could access the resources available hereabouts. In 1837, Captain George Johnston's son, James A., moved his family to Graham from Swain County, Tennessee. James A.'s wife died young childrenless so he decided to settle down permanently inGraham with his brother John A.'s family which included four sons named William (1829-1907), Alfred (1830-1901), Nathan (1832-1920),and Archibald (1835-1922). This move marked the beginning of what would become one of North Carolina's mostfamous families: The Johnston Family! James A.'s three daughters married local men: David Carteret (from Hyde Park)married Colonel John Biddlecombe; Martha married Major General Wm Hance; Elizabeth married Reverend Jno Pemberton). This union produced two more children: Walter Fenton (baptized December 15th 1870) who became a Methodist minister; Margaret Brownell(baptized September 5th 1874) who married Drury Coker]. These marriages solidified ties between neighbors/families across different parts of rural North Carolina during this time period. It also signaled that Graham would become an important center for trade within its region as businesses started up along State Road 20 which connected Battle Creek with Raleigh through townspeople like James A.. These business connections would help lead to growth for various industries such as textile manufacture and shipping during this time period as well as create opportunities for economic development within our community over time...
